Custom Keybindings
Custom Keybindings
aInspired lets you customize what happens when you long-press keys, giving you quick access to custom actions and shortcuts.
How Keybindings Work
Each key on the keyboard has multiple stages when you hold it:
- Tap -- Types the primary character (e.g., "a").
- Short hold (~500ms) -- Shows the secondary character or accent popup.
- Medium hold (~900ms) -- Opens the gesture wheel with quick actions.
- Long hold (~1.7s) -- Executes your custom keybinding.
- Extra long hold (~3.3s) -- Opens keybinding configuration for that key.
Setting Up a Custom Keybinding
- Long-press any key for about 3.3 seconds (until the configuration panel appears).
- Choose what action the keybinding should perform:
- Tap Save.
- Now, holding that key for ~1.7 seconds will trigger your custom action.
Editing Keybindings
From Settings
- Open the aInspired app.
- Go to Settings > Keybindings.
- You'll see a list of all configured keybindings.
- Tap any entry to edit or delete it.
From the Keyboard
Long-press any key for ~3.3 seconds to open its keybinding configuration.
Use Cases
- Email address: Bind your email to long-press "E" for quick form filling.
- Common phrases: Bind "On my way!" to long-press "O."
- Code snippets: Bind frequently used code patterns to specific keys.
- Quick navigation: Bind "Select All" to long-press "A" for fast text selection.
Tips
- Start with 2-3 keybindings for your most common text snippets. You can always add more later.
- The gesture wheel (medium hold) gives you quick access to actions without configuring keybindings.
- All timing thresholds can be adjusted in Settings > Keybindings > Timing if the default hold durations don't feel right.
